THIS MONTH1S LETTER:
SUPPORT RATIFICATION OF THE
UN LAW OF THE SEA CONVENTION:
On February 25th, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the UN Law
of the Sea Convention by a unanimous vote of 15-0.  Since then, some in the
Senate are looking to block a vote on this treaty and thus prevent its
ratification.
The treaty, sometimes described as a "constitution for the oceans," provides
a comprehensive framework for peaceful oceanic relations.  The treaty enjoys
broad support from environmental groups, the shipping industry, the fishing
industry, and the U.S. Navy, as well as from organizations that support
international law and conflict prevention.  Those in the Senate that oppose
international agreements of any kind must not be allowed to stall this
treaty.

ACTION:  Write to your Senators.  [Washington DC 20510]  Ask them to urge
the Senate leadership to quickly bring the UN Convention on the Law of the
Sea to the floor of the Senate for a vote.  Ask him or her to speak out in
favor of the Law of the Sea Convention and to support it when it reaches the
floor.  Tell your Senators that this treaty will help strengthen
international law, protect the earth's natural resources, and prevent
violent conflict.  Send a copy of your letter to your local newspaper as a
Letter to the Editor.  [From Friends Committee on National Legislation.
