THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Stop Funding for New Nuclear Weapons!
The Bush administration is reviving its proposal for a new generation of “usable” nuclear weapons, often described as “Bunker Busters.” In 2004, peace activists achieved a victory when Rep. David Hobson (OH) led the successful drive to eliminate funding for these weapons. Now we need to mobilize again to slam the door shut on these new nuclear weapons before the administration’s proposal gains momentum.
The administration is asking for $4 million for the Bunker Buster in the Energy Department budget for FY06 and another $14 million for FY07. It’s also asking for $4.5 million in the Air Force budget to do non-nuclear tests of the Bunker Buster. While the amounts requested are small relative to the overall military budget, the significance of asking for funds for new, more usable, nuclear weapons goes far beyond budgetary issues. While our administration is criticizing other countries for pursuing nuclear weapon technology, it is upgrading our own weapons arsenal. If nuclear weapons are unacceptable for Iran and North Korea, they are unacceptable for the United States.
Write to your representatives today. [House of Representatives, Washington DC 20515, U.S. Senate, Washington DC 20510.] Urge them to help eliminate all funding for the Bunker Buster weapons from current legislation. Tell them that new nuclear weapons will not make the world more secure. Developing new nuclear weapons sends a message to the rest of the world that nuclear weapons are acceptable. This undermines U.S. and world security. From <FCNL.org/>
