SAVE THE DATE: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14th, 4:30 PM, Federal Building, State St., Rochester. Stop Military Aid to Colombia. Welcome John Honeck home! Help convince Senator Schumer to change his position on military aid to Colombia. Peace activist John Honeck is going to Colombia on July 29th with Witness for Peace and the School of the Americas Watch. John will be with a special delegation, one that Colombians can relate to and appreciate-a delegation of prisoners of conscience. (John spent three months in a federal prison for the "crime" of peaceful civil disobedience at the infamous School of the Americas.) John will return after two weeks, and will speak at this demonstration.

At the School of the Americas, the US trains and equips the thugs who terrorize Colombia and the rest of Latin America. John Honeck has made sacrifices to protest our government's continued support of immoral and anti-democratic regimes. Let's support John and others like him, and let's send a message to Sen. Schumer about our opposition to US policy in Colombia. We need to welcome John home, and proudly proclaim for peace!

THIS MONTH'S TELPHONE CALL: Lori Berenson Vindicated by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the OAS. This judicial body has ruled that Peru's authoritarian laws-instituted by the now disgraced former President Alberto Fujimori-are illegal and violate fundamental human rights as specified by the American Convention on Human Rights. In particular, the Inter-American Commission concluded:

"The Peruvian State is responsible for the violation of the right to judicial guarantees, of personal integrity, and of the right concerning the principle of legality to the detriment of Berenson, having judged her in the military court, submitting her to inhumane and degrading conditions of detention, starting a new trial conforming to Legal Decree 25475 (antiterrorist law), and permitting the evidence collected during the first [military] process with a value of proof in said [second] trial."

In other words, the Peruvian government imprisoned Lori Berenson unjustly the first time, they made her suffer under horrible conditions, and now they are keeping her in prison unjustly after the second "trial." Please call the White House Hotline and tell Pres. Bush to demand Lori's release from prison.
