"HUMAN RACE NOT ARMS RACE"
December 31, 2000
NEXT GVCP MEETING: SATURDAY, JANUARY 20th, 10:00 AM, 2290 ANDERSON RD, LINWOOD. [Anderson Road runs west from Route 36, one road south of Route 20. 2290 is 1.7 miles west of Route 36, on the left.]
SAVE THE DATES: January 20th, Washington DC: Protest at Bush’s Inauguration. Gather at 14th Street NW & Pennsylvania Avenue at 10:00 AM. "Bush's Election is a result of the lynching of the Black vote in Florida. ‘Governor Death’ does not have a mandate to push his pro-rich, anti-poor, racist policies….On Saturday January 20th, tens of thousands of people will be protesting the inauguration of George W. Bush. The protest will address…the racist conspiracy on the part of the rightwing U.S. Supreme Court, the Bush Dynasty and the Florida legislature to steal the election by suppressing mainly the African-American vote in Florida." [Not sure whether this protest falls within the GVCP mandate, but I included the info because many of the demands—the U.S. Navy out of Vieques and taking money from the Pentagon to invest in social needs—are consistent with GVCP’s program.] For more information, call the 716-436-6458, or contact Gene at <eugenec@frontiernet.net>.
March 6-11, 2001, WASHINGTON DC. U.S. & INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO BAN LANDMINES. WORKSHOPS, GIANT SHOE PILE, LEGISLATIVE ACTION CONFERENCE, MORE. CALL 617-695-0041.
THIS MONTH’S LETTERS: Ensure the safety of Dorothy Grenada (Urgent Action bulletin enclosed). [The US Urgent Action office has given GVCP permission to copy their bulletin and distribute it to our members. As always in Amnesty International work, communications should be polite and respectful.] I met Dorothy Grenada when we traveled together from Managua to León, Nicaragua, as part of a health colloquium delegation. She is an amazing person, and the work she is doing in Mulukuku is outstanding. Nicaraguan President Alemán is clearly sending a message to the solidarity community—Get Out of Nicaragua. Our opposition to Alemán’s actions is important to many people and organizations in Nicaragua, not only to the people of Mulukuku. [Two errors in the U/A bulletin—Dorothy Grenada is a nurse, not a nun. Also, she was named one of the "100 heroines of the world" by people in Rochester, not the NYC Mayor.] PLEASE WRITE, FAX, E-MAIL, OR PHONE THE PEOPLE LISTED BY U/A NOW!
Free Lori Berenson. President Clinton has just a few more days to exercise the authority of his office and press the Peruvian government to Free U.S. citizen Lori Berenson. Please get signatures on the enclosed petition and mail it to the White House. Also, please call the White House (202-456-1111) and leave a message for Clinton—don’t leave Lori in jail when you leave office!
