THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Action Alert: Preserve the ABM Treaty

President Bush has given notice of his intent to withdraw the U.S. from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty in six months. The U.S. can still revoke its decision to withdraw during the six-month notice period.

BACKGROUND: The ABM Treaty has been the cornerstone of arms control efforts since its inception in 1972. Withdrawing from the treaty to continue development of a missile shield system could weaken ties with traditional allies of the United States and alienate friendly, non-nuclear countries. It would also hinder progress on nuclear reductions. A crash program to build a $200 billion (or more) missile shield is not a substitute for effective diplomacy, arms control, disarmament and international cooperation.

ACTION: Please ask your Representative and Senators Schumer and Clinton to speak to the President and urge him to reverse his decision about withdrawing from the ABM Treaty.

BILL MOYERS REPORTS: "TRADING DEMOCRACY" is the first television exposé of what's been called an "end run around the Constitution." This special report will reveal how corporate investors are using an obscure provision in the North American Free Trade Agreement to challenge US laws, regulations, and jury verdicts—arguing those challenges before international trade tribunals that rule in secret—and winning."
