THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Tell the House that Anti-Torture Laws Must Apply to All! Very shortly, Congress must vote on an amendment introduced by Sen. John McCain designed to prohibit the U.S. from engaging in torture. Incredibly, the Bush Administration is still trying to weaken the McCain amendment.

Earlier this year, public outcry forced the Administration to abandon attempts to introduce exemptions and exceptions to the prohibitions on torture in the McCain amendment in the Senate. We need another strong public outcry focused on the House of Representatives to again stop the advocates of torture.

Those of us who oppose torture—at any time, in any guise, under any definition, for any reason, and at any location—must be tenacious, and we must now focus our messages on members of the House of Representatives.

Contact your Representative today. Tell her or him that—even under end-of-the-year pressure—she/he must stand steadfast and resolute against torture. Congress must not accept any exception, waiver, exemption, or weakening of the McCain amendment. U.S. law must never condone torture.
