SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, July 15th, 12:00 Noon, PICNICA, Southview Shelter in Mendon Ponds Park. BRING A DISH TO PASS. This will be a cultural and social gathering to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution. Cosponsored by ROCLA Peña. Christine Sevilla and Tim Wells will perform.

THIS MONTH’S LETTER: "Yankee go Home": US Ambassador to Nicaragua, Oliver Garza, began the traditional threats that the White House uses to intervene in Nicaragua’s internal politics. With the Nicaraguan presidential elections only four months away, Garza stated, "If the Sandinistas win in these coming elections, but don't change their policies, then neither will the United States change its policies towards them. We will maintain our policy of defending democracy firmly until we see genuine changes in the Sandinista Party in particular." If anyone missed his point, Garza made a suggestion in a clear allusion to the Sandinistas’ divided opposition: "If the democrats of the country really feel the FSLN has a chance of winning in November, I would recommend that they unite."

In another blatant intervention in Nicaragua's internal affairs, Lino Gutiérrez, US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, exploded onto the Nicaraguan political scene with a speech that clearly attacked Daniel Ortega. He then held a series of meetings with anti-Sandinista politicians to support the formation of a Liberal-Conservative alliance to block the FSLN from regaining the presidency in the elections this November. We must strongly protest this interference in Nicaraguan politics!

Please call or write to: Senators Schumer and Clinton [Washington, DC 20510] and your Representative [Washington, DC 20515]. Demand that these threatening interventions stop immediately. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. Email addresses: <http://www.house.gov> and <http://www.senate.gov>.

Tell President Bush that Lori Berenson must come home. Lori Berenson was found "guilty" in a show trial, and sentenced to 20 years in jail in Peru. Call the White House NOW. Tell President Bush to demand Lori’s release from prison. 202-456-1111.

Peace,
