THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Stop Funding for New Nuclear Weapons! Congress is about to take the first step down the dangerous road to the development and testing of new nuclear weapons—weapons that are intended for use against underground bunkers. The Senate Armed Services Committee cut $15.5 million out of the budget for this new nuclear weapon (called “The Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator”). However, pro-weapons senators are expected to offer amendments that would restore the full amount in the Bush budget for this new weapon. Problems with the “bunker buster” weapon include radioactive contamination, a likely renewal of nuclear weapon testing, and a breach of our treaty promise not to use any such weapons against non-nuclear powers. WRITE: to Senators Schumer and Clinton, urging them to vote against any amendment that would restore the funding cuts made by the Senate Armed Services Committee. Send copies to Senators Carl Levin (D-MI), Committee Chair, and John Warner (R-VA), Ranking Minority Member. [U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510] [From 20/20 Vision, 1828 Jefferson Pl., NW, Washington, DC 20036. <www.2020vision.org>.]
