THIS MONTH’S LETTER: OPPOSE THE NOMINATION OF A MAN WHO BELIEVES IN TORTURE.  President Bush has nominated the Defense Department general counsel—William Haynes—to a position on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.  Haynes was part of the team that developed the Administration’s justification for the use of torture.  This nomination provides an opportunity for the Senate to question the Administration's use of brutal interrogation techniques and the detention conditions that are conducive to those techniques.  All acts of torture are morally indefensible.  Torture violates human dignity, and is contrary to the U.S. Constitution, U.S. statutes, and U.S. treaty obligations, including the Geneva Conventions and the Convention Against Torture and Cruel, Inhuman, and Degrading Treatment or Punishment.  Senator Schumer is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  He’s in a position to ask Mr. Haynes the hard questions about his role in supporting the use of torture by U.S. personnel.  [Condensed from information provided by the Friends Committee on National Legislation.]

Write to Senator Schumer and tell him to oppose this nomination and to bring the issue of the U.S. use of torture out into the open.

Hon. Charles Schumer
