THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Bush pushes National Missile Defense—We must push back! President Bush wants to steam ahead with National Missile Defense (NMD). This decision will also mean scrapping the Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Treaty. (Bush says he will then cut back on the number of weapons the U.S. keeps on high alert. While this cutback would be commendable, it would not offset the risks of NMD.) NMD has been around since Ronald Reagan proposed his "Star Wars" scheme. Politicians and military contractors play upon fears of a nuclear missile attack. While these fears may or not be justified, NMD is not the answer! As always, NMD is wrong, wrong, wrong. It is wrong because it is wildly expensive—probably over 150 billion dollars. It is wrong because it won’t work—even Pentagon supporters admit to serious doubts about NMD’s technical feasibility. It is wrong because it will destabilize international relations and provoke other countries to spend more on weapons, especially if the U.S. does not honor the ABM treaty. We urgently need leaders in Congress to speak out against NMD now—before this disastrous genie is out of the bottle! WRITE to your Representative [Washington, DC, 20515] and to Senators Schumer and Clinton [Washington, DC, 20510] telling them you oppose NMD. Tell them to take an active anti-NMD stand.
