Dear GVCP Member:
NEXT GVCP MEETING: SUNDAY June 11th 2:00 PM 3829 Federal Road, Apartment 2, Livonia. [Corner of Route 20A, just east of the Village of Livonia.] Melissa Van, Executive Director of Peace Action NYS, is now in Iran, and will come to the GVCP meeting to speak about her experiences there. [Note that June 11th isn’t a good date for some GVCP members, but I couldn’t reach Melissa to ask her for alternate dates, so June 11th it is. It doesn’t make sense for Melissa to travel across the state to speak to only a handful of people. That means that if you can come to the meeting, please bring a friend!] If you want to learn more about Melissa’s trip, check this website: <http://www.panys.org/>.
JOIN THE WEEKLY SATURDAY MORNING VIGIL FOR PEACE! 10:30–11:30 AM in Honeoye, Richmond Memorial Park, Route 20A. (Not Honeoye Falls!) [Judi Taylor 585-229-4963 <jsalsburg@monroecc.edu>] (Sponsored by Honeoye Concerned Citizens.)
THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Oppose the U.S.–India nuclear agreement. In 2005, Pres. Bush and Indian Prime Minister Singh announced a new deal to resume full civilian nuclear cooperation between the U.S. and India for the first time since India improperly used US nuclear material for its 1974 bomb test. If the Senate approves the deal in its current form, it will severely damage the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). India has refused to sign the NPT, has detonated nuclear bombs, and refuses to accept International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards over all of its nuclear facilities. So, India does not qualify for full civil nuclear cooperation under existing US laws and under global nuclear export regulations. India also refuses to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and to stop producing nuclear material for its expanding arsenal.
It is unacceptable for the U.S. to criticize Iran (an NPT member) for developing its nuclear technology, while the U.S. is simultaneously offering India (a non-NPT member) very similar nuclear technology. In addition, if this deal goes through, it will remove any incentive for nations to remain within the NPT, which offers access to civilian technology if nations abstain from the acquisition of nuclear weapons.
Write to Senators Clinton and Schumer and tell them to oppose this dangerous deal when the necessary legislation comes before the Senate.
