THIS MONTHíS LETTERS: UNITED NATIONS DAY 2000: PRESIDENT CLINTON--ACTION,
NOT WORDS! On October 24th, President Clinton stated that the U.S. "remains
fully committed to the principles of the UN Charter, and we support efforts
to make the UN a more effective tool to meet the challenges of our changing
world." These are great words, but U.S. support for the U.N. has been insufficient
and unreliable, and may continue in this vein for the foreseeable future. As
I write this, it is not clear whether congressional appropriators would provide
sufficient funds to fulfill U.S. obligations to the UN in Fiscal Year 2001.
One project that President Clinton could attempt, even after November 7th, is
the restoration of U.S. membership in UNESCO [United Nations Educational, Scientific,
and Cultural Organization]. Ronald Reagan withdrew the U.S. from UNESCO in 1984.
In 1994 President Clinton promised to bring the U.S. back into UNESCO, but,
obviously, he has not kept his promise. WRITE to President Bill Clinton, The
White House, Washington D.C. 20500, asking him to demonstrate his commitment
to the U.N. by applying his efforts to restore full U.S. membership and participation
in UNESCO. This would be a welcome signal to the world community of a renewed
U.S. commitment to the United Nations. [This material adapted from Friends Committee
