THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Take Action Now to Halt National Missile Defense! The first component of a national missile defense system (NMD) is scheduled to go on-line by the end of this year. But, it’s not too late to halt and rollback NMD. The Pentagon will be unable to continue work on the project unless they win massive funding approval from Congress. Write to your Representatives in the House and Senate, and the President, urging them to end missile defense and redirect their focus to assuring a more secure and far safer environment for US citizens.
Ronald Reagan was the first president to actively pursue “Star Wars” missile defense in the mid-80s. Missile defense languished because it was astronomically expensive, technologically unfeasible, unnecessary, and dangerous. Still, research and development on the system persisted through each subsequent administration. Now, with little notice, the Bush administration and its defense industry allies have moved forward the time for deployment of the system.
Missile defense was a bad idea before and it’s a worse idea now. There is no evidence to demonstrate that missile defense works. In any event, a small group of individuals with one nuclear weapon pose a far more likely threat than a massive nuclear attack.
Instead of pouring another $100 billion into this useless scheme, the US should be working on securing the safety of its citizens and the world by preventing terrorism, working to eliminate the nuclear threat, and looking for peaceful solutions to violent conflicts. WRITE to SEN. SCHUMER & CLINTON, WASHINGTON DC 20510; YOUR REPRESENTATIVE, WASHINGTON DC 20515; THE WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON DC 20500, AND TELL THEM NO STAR WARS NOW OR EVER.
