Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton has been one of the greatest spiritual voices for peace in the U.S. in latter half of the 20th century. His career as an activist involves a variety of social issues: civil rights, war and peace, nuclear arms, rights of the oppressed, rights of poor people and of workers. He is the founding president of Pax Christi USA, and a member of the board of directors of Pax Christi Internationalis. Bishop Gumbleton is widely recognized as the primary author of The Challenge of Peace, the pastoral letter on war and peace presented in 1981 by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Donít miss this opportunity to hear Bishop Gumbleton in person.
NEXT GVCP MEETING: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28th, 11:00 AM (immediately following the UNAR event). Peter & Gail Mott will give us a short presentation about recent events in Mexico, especially in Chiapas. The Motts are very knowledgeable about this region. (Peter Mott and Bishop Gumbleton traveled together for a week in a delegation to Chiapas!) Our meeting will be at the Dugan Center, in the conference room closest to the kitchen.
THIS MONTHíS LETTERS: Sierra Leone needs U.N. help! Our friends in GVCPís Sierra Leone sister group have written to us asking for help in bringing peace to their troubled nation. GVCP member Amy Pitt has spoken to U.N. officials to ask for their opinion on the best way to assist Sierra Leone. Their take is that the U.N. should and could bring peace to Sierra Leone, but not without a commitment from the Security Council to put enough troops into the country to do the job properly. WRITE to Martin Andjaba, President, U.N. Security Council, Rm. C, 216A, Secretariat Bldg., United Nations, NY 10017. Tell Mr. Andjaba that the killing and mutilation in Sierra Leone must stop. Even though other trouble spots have the headlines right now, the U.N. must not forget about Sierra Leone!
