THIS MONTH'S PEACE ACTIVITY: Sign the Petition for a Just Peace in the Middle East, and then persuade 19 friends, neighbors, and coworkers to do the same. Passions run higher about the Middle East than about almost any other issue in which peace activists are involved. The enclosed petition was laboriously and patiently hammered out by people who all want peace, but who do not all agree about the best way to achieve it. Now that the group has produced this document, it is important to put it to use-it is a petition, not just a statement. Let's get behind this effort and get those signatures!
THIS MONTH'S LETTER: DON'T ATTACK IRAQ! As Molly Ivins writes, "At last count we were already involved in military actions in seven countries, including Colombia ..Seems like that's a lot on our plate right now. Under the new Bush doctrine of "unilaterally determined pre-emptive self defense," we get to go around attacking anyone we want without provocation. Not so much as a "Remember the Maine!" or a Tonkin Gulf resolution. Did anybody ever get to vote on "'unilaterally determined pre-emptive self defense'?" [Rochester D&C, 8/26/02] WRITE to President Bush [White House, Washington DC, 20500], Sen. Schumer and Clinton [US Senate, Washington DC, 20510], and your Representative [US House of Representatives, Washington DC, 20515]. Tell them that you don't like Saddam Hussein, but that you don't want the US to attack Iraq just because President Bush thinks it's a good idea. An attack on Iraq will cause immeasurable suffering and damage, will further estrange us from our allies, and will cost countless billions of dollars. NO TO WAR IN IRAQ!!
Please call the White House Hotline and tell Pres. Bush to demand Lori Berenson's release from prison. [202-456-1111]. Check the website of the Committee to Free Lori Berenson for the latest news about how to help Lori. <www.freelori.org>
