THIS MONTH’S LETTER: Tell your Senators to support Senator Byrd! In an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, Appropriations Chair Robert C. Byrd said he intends to attach “strings” to the fiscal 2008 war supplemental funding bill in an effort to bring U.S. troops home faster than the current administration plan would. “In the fifth year of this misguided war, I am convinced that the best way to support our troops is to bring them home, and the only way to get them home may be to somehow restrict the funds for this disastrous war,” said Byrd. Here are some short quotes from Sen. Byrd: "Mission accomplished has turned into a commitment to have our grandchildren patrolling Baghdad into the middle of this century!" "Instead of a coalition of the willing, what we really have is a coalition of contractors."
Paul K. Martin, of Peace Action, writes, “This may be our best chance to see . . . change on Iraq by the Bush administration. We would still need to face the Bush veto, but this could be a big fight between congress and the administration. Ramped up pressure on the Senate over the next few months is important.”
Please WRITE to Senators Clinton and Schumer. Tell them that you support Senator Byrd, and you want them to support him too. Note: A GVCP member has pointed out that postal mail to Congress may be delayed for weeks or longer. She suggests writing to the Senators in their local office. Staffers tell us that they fax these letters to the Senators’ offices every day. Address for both Senators is:
