Annual GVCP Hiroshima/Nagasaki Candlelight Vigil
Avon traffic circle, Routes 5&20, Avon. This yearly event—
our 38th year—is a very powerful, moving public statement
of our dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament.
This year marks the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Please join us, and bring a friend!
From GVCP member Suzanne Blackburn: John Woolman, a Quaker in
colonial New Jersey, was ahead of his time in thinking about and acting on
many social issues.
He structured his life and livelihood to be consistent with his
belief in peace, equality, and simplicity, as described in his Journal and
other writings. Consider the following: "May we look upon our treasures and
the furniture of our houses, and the garments in which we array ourselves,
and try whether the seeds of war have any nourishment in these our
possessions or not." John Woolman invites each of us to ask ourselves how
our belongings and our lifestyles nourish the seeds of war in the world.
How we each answer that question can guide us in our every-day actions
—in our decisions about what we purchase, what we eat, how we travel, and
countless other choices we make every day. And the companion questions are
just as important: How do we sow peace in the world in our everyday lives?
What actions can we make that nourish the seeds of peace in the world?
Join us at our next GVCP action, event, or meeting and share your thoughts,
insights, and experiences about peace.
