July 7, 2013

Dear GVCP Member:

NEXT REGULAR GVCP MEETING is SATURDAY, July 20th, 1:00 PM (Lunch), 1:30 PM (Meeting). Omega Restaurant, 4182 Lakeville Rd (Route 20A) Geneseo.

NEXT GVCP ACTION: Tuesday, August 6th, 7:30 P.M. Annual GVCP Hiroshima/Nagasaki Candlelight Vigil Avon traffic circle, Routes 5 & 20, Avon.

This yearly event—our 39th year—is a very powerful, moving public statement of our dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament. This year marks the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Please join us, and bring a friend! Note: At 6:15 PM, some GVCP members will gather at Tom Wahl's restaurant, 283 East Main St. (Routes 5 & 20) in Avon for an informal meal and meeting. All welcome!

This Month's Letter: Tell President Obama that the time is right and the world is ready to negotiate the elimination of nuclear weapons!

The United Nations has initiated several exciting—and apparently good faith— attempts at bringing about nuclear disarmament. In Prague, in 2009, President Obama announced he would seek "a world without nuclear weapons."

However, the U.S. has not participated in several recent international nuclear disarmament conferences. It is important that the President hear from us that we want the U.S. to participate in the ongoing international efforts towards eliminating nuclear weapons.

We call upon the President to:

• Authorize U.S. participation in the September 26, 2013 United Nations High-Level Meeting on Nuclear Disarmament. Ideally, we would like the President to give a keynote speech at the meeting;

• Authorize U.S. participation in the UN Working Group on Achieving a World Free of Nuclear Weapons.
