Dear GVCP Member:
NEXT REGULAR GVCP MEETING is SATURDAY, June 30th,
1:00 PM (Lunch), 1:30 PM (Meeting).
Omega Restaurant, 4182 Lakeville Rd (Route 20A) Geneseo.
NEXT GVCP ACTION: Thursday, August 9th, 7:30 PM
Annual GVCP Hiroshima/Nagasaki Candlelight Vigil
Avon traffic circle, Routes 5&20, Avon.
This yearly event—our 38th year—is a very powerful, moving public
statement of our dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament.
This year marks the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
This Month's Letter: Stop Drone Attacks!
We are a nation that callously and casually kills. U.S.
drones are killing many innocent civilians in Pakistan,
Yemen, and elsewhere. Drones are making the world less stable,
and creating new enemies. And, of course, they are destroying men, women,
and children indiscriminately.
[Adapted from Roots Action <http://rootsaction.org/>]
Please write to the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon,
urging him to investigate the U.S. drone attacks. Navanethem Pillay,
the U.N.'s High Commissioner for Human Rights, is concerned that
drone attacks violate international law. If they do violate international law,
the U.N. should ultimately pursue sanctions against nations
manufacturing, possessing, or using weaponized drones.
Address: Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon,
United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017.

Comment: Now's the time for action! Actually, it's always the time for
action. I know that some people are sympathetic to the cause of peace,
but their efforts for peace stop with learning about the issues.
Obviously, learning about the issues is a prerequisite for action. However, it's
not a substitute for action. If you've been a casual GVCP member, now's the time
to become an active member. Our members are friendly, and our meetings are
short and action-oriented. Even if you hate meetings, you can write "This
Month's Letter," and also come to the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration.
If you care about other people in the world, you need the peace movement.
And, of course, the peace movement always needs you.
Peace,
Arnie Matlin for GVCP
