Dear GVCP Member:

Friday, August 6th, 7:30 PM Annual GVCP Hiroshima/Nagasaki Candlelight Vigil at the Avon traffic circle, Routes 5&20, Avon. This yearly event—probably our 36th year—is a very powerful and moving public statement of our dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
New leaflet! We are enclosing two copies of our new GVCP flyer. (download HERE) Pass these on to friends, ask them to join GVCP, and invite them to the vigil!
Save the date: Presentation by Hank Stone of the film “War Made Easy” (2007), and discussion of where we go from here. Thursday July 22nd. (Note: 4th Thursday!) 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Baha’i Center, 693 East Avenue, Rochester (Entrance and parking off Oxford Street). Free and open to the public. This movie, narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, brings us up to date on “a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq.”
WEEKLY SUNDAY NOON VIGILS FOR PEACE: 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM in Rochester. East Avenue & Goodman Street. [585-442-3383] Sponsor: Peace Action & Education.
This month’s letter: Join the Movement to Ratify New START! The U.S. Senate has begun hearings on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. Now is the time to raise our voices to ensure ratification. New START includes only modest cuts in a dangerously bloated nuclear arsenal, but nevertheless deserves our enthusiastic support. It reduces the risks to our national security and that in itself is enough reason for leaders across the political spectrum to support it. [Adapted from PSR.] Tell our Senators to work for ratification of New START!
Sen. Gillibrand:Tel (585) 263-6250 Fax (585) 263-6247.
Sen. Schumer: Tel (585) 263-5866 Fax (585) 263-3173.
Both Senators have offices at the Federal Office Building, 100 State St., Rochester, NY 14614. Use websites for all lawmakers to utilize electronic mail.
Peace,
Arnie Matlin for GVCP
