Dear GVCP Member:

NEXT REGULAR GVCP MEETING is SUNDAY, MARCH 10th
1:00 PM (Lunch), 1:30 PM (Meeting).
Omega Restaurant, 4182 Lakeville Rd (Route 20A) Geneseo.

Save the Dates:  Anti-Drone Weekend in Syracuse: Friday, April 26th –
Sunday, April 28th.
GVCP member Joyce Lehmann points out that the U.S.
policy of arbitrarily assassinating presumed enemies—often using drones for
this purpose—is against international and national law. Considering these
killings part of the “war on terror” is a vague, endless excuse for killing
people when no actual battlefield exists.  Some of these people may indeed
be international criminals, but no one gave the U.S. government the
authority to serve as police, judge, jury, and executioner.  Also, of
course, the U.S. government is prepared to accept the deaths of innocent
men, women, and children who happen to be in the area when the drone attacks
occur.  We hope many members of GVCP will join anti-drone activists from all
over New York State (and beyond) in Syracuse for the weekend.  More
information about schedule and venue when it’s available.

Peace Action New York State
will hold its Annual Meeting in Syracuse during the
anti-drone weekend on Sunday morning, April 28th, 8:15 AM.  I will be there
representing GVCP.  I hope other GVCP members, as well as Geneseo Peace
Action members, will join me.  Again, more information about schedule and
venue soon.

This Month’s Letters:  Tell our Senators to cut some of the bloated military
budget.
It’s easy to find many hundreds of military programs that need to
be cut back.  However, PANYS has suggested one that’s really worth opposing:
12 new nuclear submarines to replace part of our present strategic ballistic
missile submarine fleet. In the last congressional session, Rep. Edward
Markey suggested that we could cut procurement of the new nuclear submarines
from twelve to eight.  (Of course, we would like to see the number cut to
zero.  However, Rep. Markey was trying to create legislation that could
pass.)

It’s estimated that this cut alone would save over $27 billion over the
next ten years!

Sen. Chuck Schumer is extremely powerful, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand sits on
the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Tell them both to cut funding for these expensive, destabilizing nuclear weapon
systems. To communicate by e-mail, go to the websites of each Senator.
Mail c/o U.S. Senate, Washington DC 20510.

Peace,

Arnie Matlin for GVCP
