NEXT GVCP MEETING is SATURDAY, JANUARY 24th, 2015 1:00 PM (Lunch), 1:30 PM(Meeting). Omega Restaurant, 4182 Lakeville Road, Geneseo.

This Month’s Letters & Calls: Depleted Uranium toxic legacy!  The U.S. and allied forces used ammunition that contained radioactive depleted uranium (DU) in Iraq.  Dust that is contaminated with radioactive depleted uranium has the potential to cause cancer and birth defects.  Every one of us should be angry that, for all of our promises of freeing Iraq, what we have left them is a toxic legacy that will last for generations to come.  In December, the UN General Assembly will vote on a draft resolution that asks nations that have fired DU to provide firing locations.  It also asks international organizations to carry out further research on DU.  It asks any states with the means to do so to provide assistance to countries affected by DU.  It’s not a lot to ask, but the U.S. persistently votes against these resolutions.  In the most recent vote about helping to solve the DU problem, 146 nations voted “Yes,” there were 26 abstentions, and only four nations voted “No.” Not surprisingly, these four nations were U.S., UK, France, and Israel.  A second vote on the resolution will take place early in December.  Our job is to urge Secretary of State John Kerry to make the right moral choice. He should direct the U.S. to vote “Yes.”  [Adapted from an article by Ben Griffin, and several other sources.]

Suggested Action:  E-mail, write, or call Secretary Kerry right away!

Message: Support the UN Resolution to help solve the problem of depleted uranium in Iraq.
